"Sing us a song, you're the piano man, sing us a song tonight."
Looking for something different to do after 4 p.m. that possibly involves singing along to a classic from Billy Joel?
Everyone has heard about it, but few have checked it out. The Ivory Room Piano Bar in downtown Madison is quite a find! Located right off of the Capitol Square, this unique spot offers daily and happy hour drink specials as well as a "martini of the month," (The Grape White Cosmo is what you can expect for the remainder of July.)
Co-owners Jack and Julie frequented a piano bar in Chicago, and decided to
bring the idea to the music loving city of Madison. Passing by the window, one
can see the entertainment happening and be drawn in. Walking in to the place,
there is literally starlights above. The place has a cozy yet classy feel with
barstools available surrounding the piano itself.
On a Tuesday night, expect those seats to be filled with regulars who sing along together to the classic tunes. Unlike a lot of piano bars, there is no dress code. The bar welcomes anyone of drinking age, and with a cover charge of $0, it's great on the wallet too! The bar is located across the street from the Overture Hall and just around the corner from the beginning of State Street. The mixed crowd of regulars and random adventure seekers enjoy music varying from Elton John to blues or rock until bartime, and everyone is welcome to chime in!
They are closed on Sundays and Mondays, but open at 4 p.m. the rest of the week. There is an assortment of piano players and singers to fit any musical craving. If classics are preferred, Tuesdays are the winner. Wednesdays feature anything from The Beatles to some country. Get your fill of jazz and blues Thursday, and be sure to stop in on a Saturday night where a husband and wife duo take on any and all song requests. This is a great little spot in a perfect location for anyone who is in the mood for a melody.
