FREQUENCY BAR
One of Madison's newest additions to the live music scene (celebrating just over a year in business) is The Frequency located by the Capitol on 121 West Main Street right downtown.
The kind of venue that your mother warned you about, The Frequency was opened by local musician and longtime entertainment booker, Darwin Sampson. The fact that he's been plugged into the scene for well over a decade means that the club knew what it was doing and was a great place to hear music right from the get-go.
Redesigned from its former incarnation as Madison's Supper Club (which was home for the Mad Cabaret, a ridiculously entertaining live music show that was popular in the mid-Aughts), the stage was moved to the back of the room and a new sound system was put into place.
The club is one of the few in town that has music seven nights a week and one of its main attractions is that it hosts touring as well as local bands. The styles featured are usually indie rock, punk, metal, and rock, but there's plenty of singer-songwriters and alternative styles that come through the room as well.
This is one of the places to go to see up-and-coming acts from all over the country because the venue isn't afraid to take chances on new bands on the road.James Brown's legendary funky drummer, Clyde Stubblefield ("the most sampled drummer in the world"!) takes up residence there every Monday at 9 o'clock. Every Tuesday, their "Freqy Hour" from six to eight in the evening features Chicago Blues Tuesdays which bring a Chicago bluesman (or woman!) up to jam with a house band hosted by local jazz and blues guitarist, AJ Love.
Anyone's welcome to bring a guitar and play along for those events as well. The Frequency has pizzas and bar food if you're hungry, but it also features some of the best drink prices on the Capitol Square.
